This is a PSA to all parents who are considering getting their kid a gym membership – whether the kid asked for it on his/her own, or the parent is the one initiating it.

BUY YOUR KID 10 SESSIONS WITH A TRAINER!!

This will be the best money you’ve ever spent on your child.

I see the same thing month after month, and year after year. A parent comes into the gym with their 15 year old kid – and says they want to get them a gym membership. We proceed to ask them if they have any experience, or are interested in a training program or sessions with a trainer.. and more often than not, get the same response.

“No, Timmy has been doing weights at school in gym class.”

“No, Timmy has been doing dryland with his hockey team, he knows how to train.”

“Timmy says he’s been working out with his friends after school in the weight room, he’s fine.”

NO! TIMMY IS NOT FINE!

Timmy needs a trainer (not you – his parent) to teach him proper form, proper set up, how to select the right weight, proper counting, basic nutrition guidelines (which definitely shouldn’t come from you), and gym etiquette.

This is like the equivalent of me saying “I’ve changed a flat tire and put new wipers on my car.. I think I’ll tackle this engine problem.”

You, nor he/she has the experience to properly design a program, ensure proper technique, or how to efficiently group exercises.

Spend the $$ and invest in your child’s health, fitness, and body.. which they’ll have for the REST OF THEIR LIFE.

Sincerely,

– A gym owner who has seen hundreds of kids come through our doors. Some of who got injured.. some of who look the same after 3 years.. some who have grown as strong teenagers with self confidence.. some who now play their sport in university/college.. some who come into the gym with a purpose.. and some who have gone on to set World Records. I’m sure you can guess who’s parents hired a trainer.
